Designing something different
Hannah always dreamed of a creative career, but growing up, financial stability was a constant concern. She saw within her own family how the lack of a college degree limited her loved ones’ job opportunities, and how financial struggles impacted their sense of self-worth.
Hannah was determined to do something different for herself and for her family. “I realized early on how important higher education is. I wanted to change the pattern, to establish a strong foundation for the future by earning my bachelor’s degree.”
To afford tuition, Hannah moved into more affordable housing, picked up a job that worked with her class schedule, attended STEM scholarship-writing workshops, and applied for every financial aid opportunity she could find. But financially, things were still tough. Then she found WWIN. Hannah had applied for scholarships and financial aid so many times before, but WWIN was different. In WWIN, she found more than a scholarship—she found a community.

“Between working and going to school, there were times I would feel stressed and isolated and lonely—and somehow, WWIN would always materialize in these moments. WWIN didn’t only offer financial support; they offered incredible emotional support. Suddenly you have a group of women cheering you on from the sidelines. And they keep cheering you on, even after graduation. It’s just a whole new level of care.”
Through WWIN, Hannah also had her first career coaching experience. Working with her coach Jenna was eye-opening and empowering, providing Hannah a new level of mentorship and guidance. Jenna not only helped Hannah plan for her future career but also helped her to build confidence, understand which opportunities best fit her personality and goals, and overcome her imposter syndrome.
In the spring of 2020, Hannah’s long-time dream came true. She graduated with her bachelor’s degree in graphic design from Lake Washington Institute of Technology, an achievement she sees as her greatest accomplishment. Today, Hannah is putting her design skills to work as a marketing and social media specialist with a creative agency. “WWIN was the catalyst that helped me get to graduation. I don’t think I would have a college degree if it weren’t for WWIN. I feel eternally indebted to them, and their support continues to impact my life every single day.”
This Women’s History Month, we invite you to support women like Hannah who are making a difference in communities across Washington state. Their creativity, determination and accomplishment make the future brighter for all of us.
